About Marianne Starck Marianne Starck (1938–2007) was a German-born ceramic artist and designer best known for her work at Michael Andersen & Son in Denmark. Trained in ceramics and applied arts, she became the artistic director of the workshop in the 1950s and played a key role in shaping its modernist aesthetic. Her designs often feature sgraffito techniques, abstract patterns, and a refined use of glazes, blending functionalism with artistic expression. Starck's creations from the 1950s–70s are highly collectible today, celebrated for their bold yet organic motifs and impeccable craftsmanship. About Michael Andersen & Son Ceramic Workshop Founded in the late 19th century on the Danish island of Bornholm, Michael Andersen & Son became one of Denmark’s most respected ceramic manufacturers. The workshop was known for its innovative use of glazes, including the famous "Persia glaze", which won the Grand Prix at the 1935 World’s Fair in Brussels. During the mid-century period, the company collaborated with notable designers such as Marianne Starck, producing highly sought-after Danish Modern ceramics with unique textures, patterns, and color combinations. Michael Andersen ceramics remain iconic pieces of Scandinavian design history, prized by collectors worldwide.
