About the Item

Exquisitely handcrafted by Amitābha Studio in Amsterdam from an antique Géo Martel attributed Delft-style polychrome vase (circa early 20th century), Louis is a one-of-a-kind table lamp. Attributed to the celebrated French faience artist Georges Martel of Desvres, this piece bears the distinctive pseudo-Delft “LF” mark—a respectful homage to the 17th-century signatures of renowned Delft potteries such as De Metaale Pot under Lambertus van Eenhoorn. We’ve paired the intricately painted ceramic base with a bespoke slate-blue velvet lampshade, handmade in a Dutch atelier, and finished the piece with a complementary gold cord. The lamp was created without harming the original vase in any way. The hand-painted ceramic base bursts with the lively polychrome palette Martel is known for—burnt orange, cobalt blue, olive green, and golden yellow—all applied over a soft white tin-glazed ground. A rich tapestry of birds, floral sprays, and curling foliage enlivens the surface, reflecting the painterly precision that distinguished Martel from his Desvres contemporaries. His faithful revivalist approach, deeply rooted in historic Dutch ceramic traditions, brings an unmistakable sense of depth and authenticity to the piece. As both a collectible and a functional artwork, Louis offers timeless elegance. The saturated hues of the velvet lampshade echo the base’s ornate colorwork while softening the overall composition, allowing the lamp to radiate a warm, ambient glow. Ideal for anchoring a refined living room vignette or bringing character to a bedside table, this lamp serves as a luxurious blend of heritage and atmosphere. Georges Martel’s atelier, active from around 1900 to the early 1940s, specialized in Delft-style ceramics executed with an unusually high degree of historical accuracy. His work is celebrated for elevating the Desvres tradition through a commitment to craftsmanship and authenticity—qualities that continue to resonate with discerning collectors of decorative lighting and European faience. The lamp was created without harming the original vase in any way. ⸻ Please note: The lamp is fully wired for use in the U.S. Additionally, the listed height includes the lampshade. We also ensure compatibility for global use by offering a free plug customization service to match the electrical standards of your specific country. For U.S. customers: Any new tariff-related surcharges are already included in our shipment costs. We take care of these fees in advance so there are no unexpected charges upon delivery. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us! ⸻ About the Maker: Georges Martel (signed Géo Martel) operated a faience atelier in Desvres from circa 1900 to the early 1940s, producing Delft-style polychrome ceramics of remarkable quality. His handcrafted lamps often bore pseudo-Delft marks—like the “LF” seen here—in direct imitation of signatures used by 17th-century Delft potters, especially Lambertus van Eenhoorn of De Metaale Pot. Unlike earlier Desvres producers such as the Fourmaintraux-Courquin factory, Martel emphasized historical authenticity and painterly finesse. Today, his works remain among the most sought-after vintage table lamps in the Delft revival tradition.
