"Basket Weave" Table Lamp Attr. to Paul Laszlo
By Paul Laszlo
Located in Pasadena, CA
Visionary Paul Laszlo designed this mid-century table lamp for Brown Saltman during the 1950s in the United States. It has a wood body adorned with Laszlo's chest pattern, reminiscent of his famed "Basket Weave" furniture line. Geometry and volumes take center stage with its rectangular structure for the foot and base and tube-shaped shade. Paul Laszlo (1900-1993) was a Hungarian-born American interior designer known for his luxurious and influential work during the mid-20th century. He became a prominent figure in Hollywood's Golden Age, designing elegant interiors for celebrities, wealthy clients, and prominent institutions. Laszlo studied architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. In 1927, he moved to the United States and settled in Los Angeles, where he quickly established himself as a sought-after designer. His work embodied the glamour and sophistication of the era, combining modernist principles with opulent materials and impeccable craftsmanship. Laszlo's clientele included Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Cary Grant, and Barbara Stanwyck. Laszlo's designs often featured custom furniture, vibrant colors, rich textures, and a harmonious blend of traditional and modern elements. Throughout his career, Laszlo worked on various projects ranging from private residences to hotels, clubs, and corporate spaces. Wishon-Harrell Stoneware Table Lamp with Hand Carved Wheat Motif
By Wishon-Harrell
Located in Cincinnati, OH
This fantastic stoneware table lamp was made in Muncie, Indiana by the talented team of Jim Wishon and Jerry Harrell. The lamp was thrown by Wishon and has an ovoid form with a cylindrical neck resembling that of a bottle. The piece features three large groupings of wheat stalks which were carved by Harrell. The lamp is finished in neutral beige hues with the carved decoration executed in a deeper shade of brown. The piece is signed by both artisans at the back near the cord along with the location of their Muncie Indiana workshop. The felt-lined foot is 6" in diameter and the body is approximately 10" across as measured at its widest point. The lamp comes with a pleated fabric drum shade manufactured by Kichler. As seen in the accompanying photographs the neutral color of the fabric complements the glaze on the lamp while enabling the darker carved...
