Ernestine Cannon and Matteo D’Agostino operated a successful ceramics workshop in Salerno, Italy that produced and exported home goods to Europe and North America, from the mid 1940's until 1969.
This rare to market lamp is an iconic and highly sought after example of the work resultant from their collaboration.
The condition is lovely with a bit of scraping from the iron base to the underside of the ceramic, but this is generally unseen when displayed and in use.
Ceramics factory, active in the Salerno area since 1948, was founded by the architect Matteo D'Agostino, former owner of "D'Agostino Ceramiche" and his partner from the United States, Ernestine Virden Kannon, who held the role of artistic director. The factory, after a few years, moved from the laboratories of Brignano di Fratte to the factory in via Irno in Salerno, equipped with the most modern equipment. Management of manufacturing was offered to Guido Gambone who did not accept, but was appointed artistic director Diodorus Cossa. In 1950, some of the company's ceramics were exhibited at the Italian Crafts Exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. In the second half of the 1950s the factory, which produces modern-style majolica works and biscuit pieces intended for decoration by numerous decorators from Vietri including Renato Rossi, opened workshops in Salerno, in via Roma 33. Over the years they collaborated with the manufacture numerous artists and craftsmen including Nino Caruso, Rudolph Christman and Giacomo Onestini. Production ceased in 1968, with the passing of Matteo D'Agostino.
