About the Item

Fine Pair of French Neoclassical Urn Lamps in Veined Marble and Gilt Bronze, 19th Century A distinguished and highly decorative pair of late 19th-century French neoclassical table lamps, originally conceived as ornamental urns and subsequently converted for electricity with great sensitivity to their original design. Executed in richly variegated marble of rose, cream, and russet hues, each piece is adorned with finely cast and gilded bronze mounts of exceptional quality. The classical urn forms are embellished with elegant acanthus leaf motifs, foliate swags, and scrolling handles, resting on stepped marble plinths and raised on ormolu toupie feet. The detailing is crisp, with the warm patina of the gilt bronze complementing the marble’s natural veining to superb effect. Evocative of the neoclassical revival that flourished in France during the Belle Époque, these lamps epitomize the refined opulence of the period, drawing direct inspiration from Greco-Roman antiquity. They speak to an era when the decorative arts achieved a harmonious blend of classical restraint and luxurious finish. This pair would make a striking focal point in a grand salon, library, or collector’s interior—objects of both utility and sculptural presence. Condition Report Both lamps are in very good antique condition, retaining their original giltwood finish with a beautifully aged patina. Fully rewired using British materials to meet current UK electrical standards. PAT tested for safety, fitted with modern brass bulb holders, and ready for immediate use. Measurement Height: 44 cm / 17.3 inches Width: 18 cm / 7.1 inches Depth: 12 cm / 4.7 inches Weight: 6 k.g. / 13.2 Ilbs Cleaning, Polishing & Restoration At Shackleton Fox Antiques, every item entrusted to our care undergoes a meticulous and sensitive restoration process within our in-house workshop. Pair of French 19th Century Neoclassical Bronze and Red Marble Lamps
Located in Shippensburg, PA
FINE PAIR OF NEOCLASSICAL ORMOLU-MOUNTED ROUGE MARBLE TABLE LAMPS France, probably Paris, circa third quarter of the 19th century Item # 404LBP26Q A magnificent pair of Neoclassical vases converted into lamps, they are designed loosely after the influential vases of Antiquity known as the Medici and Borhese Vases. Those Kraters were executed in marble and have been widely considered the finest and most well-conceived vases of Antiquity. They have been frequently copied and have been the inspiration for many decorative arts, including the present pair. The original vases feature bas-relief scenes in the Medici vase of a seated Iphigenia beneath a statue of Diana surrounded by Achilles, Ulysses and Agamemnon and in the Borghese vase a scene of drunk Silenius, Dionysus wearing his animal skin garment and Ariadne all together accompanied by a procession of revellers. The present example departs from antiquity, focusing only on the Bacchic revellers and have repeated this motif across the field of the vase. They carry in their outstretched arms wreathes and long drapes of their garments, several carrying in hand the Thrysus. The chorus of figures is loosely reminiscent to the Borghese Dancers, also known as the Dancing Hours, executed in bas relief in marble...
