French 19th Century Louis XVI Gilt Bronze Bouillotte Lamp

About the Item

French 19th Century Louis XVI Gilt Bronze Bouillotte lamp A 19th century Louis XVI style bouillotte lamp in green toleware and gilt bronze, with a circular stem supporting three scrolled foliate and eagle head candle branches, raised on a finely chiselled circular dish base with openwork rim, fitted with a dark green 'tole peinte' shade. The tole shade can slide down the central shaft and be secured by a screw to accommodate the dwindling length of the lit candles. This table lamp is a fine variety of the renowned Bouillotte lamp distinguished by its finely chased gilt bronze and the unusual way of electrification (at a later stage): the candle branches still support the wax candles, light bulbs are attached seperately at the central stem and can be moved up and down as desired. Thus, the lamp gives the opportunity to alternate between candle light and electric light.
