About the Item
Glass table lamp, designed by Gunnel Nyman, manufactured by Idman Oy, 1940/1950s. Original silk shade and brass details. Turquoise green glass frame. Good vintage condition, minor patina consistent with age and use.
Gunnel Nyman is one of the best-known Finnish glass designers. She worked as a designer between 1932 and 1948 at all the major Finnish glass factories: in Riihimäki, Karhula, Iittala and Nuutajärvi. Nyman's design career was not limited to glass, however. Nyman graduated as a furniture designer in 1932 and designed not only furniture but also lighting and textiles. Nyman was a hard-working and dedicated designer who was always ready to take on new opportunities. As a freelance designer, she was able to work for several manufacturers at the same time. Gunnel Nyman died after a long illness in 1948. She did not experience the success of Finnish design in the 1950s. After her death, Nyman was awarded a gold medal for glass design at the 1951 Milan Triennale.
