Gordon & Jane Martz / Marshall Studios Ceramic Pottery Table Lamp — Matte Brown

About the Item

💡 What is it? — These signed Martz model #267 lamp come in a matte dark brown glaze and yes, this lamp has been broken and repaired with gold kintsugi. The lamp features an incised, horizontal pattern that runs top to bottom, surrounding the entire lamp. The ceramic body gives way to a thin walnut neck and the whole ensemble is capped off with the famous Martz walnut finial. This lamp first appeared in the 1966 Marshall Studios catalog and was in continuous production through the end of the company's days. The repair was completed by @modernkintsugipdx, a professional and traditional kintsugi repair service in Portland, OR. The repair was completed with 24k gold and traditional urushi lacquer. While a piece with many cracks will always remain somewhat fragile, the urushi lacquer bonds are as strong as the original ceramic and will remain intact indefinitely. This is a larger lamp and would do best on an end table or credenza. 📗 Martz / Marshall Studios 101 — Jane Marshall—whose grandmother founded Marshall Studios in 1922—married Gordon Martz in 1951, a year before the couple graduated from New York’s Alfred University. They returned to Veedersburg to work in the family business, bringing with them a passion for contemporary hand-designed stoneware. The Martzes’ work transformed Marshall Studios. What had been a lampshade manufacturing company became a hotbed of handcrafted modern lamps and accessories. Martz lamp bases were slip-cast for mass production and later decorated by hand using techniques such as incising, dipping, and brushing to create a variety of patterns and colors. Martz lamps have been featured in the Museum of Modern Art, a growing number of private collections and are the darling of the French modernist auction scene. 🔍 Condition — Perfect original condition with original hardware, socket and cord. 📏 Dimensions — Ceramic base: 11" height x 5.5" bottom diameter.
