Gordon & Jane Martz / Marshall Studios Ceramic Pottery Table Lamps, Black Glaze
About the Item
What is it?
—
Another gem from the masters of mid century lightning – Gordon and Jane Martz. Not too big, not too small – this ceramic lamp set is equally at home on an end table or credenza as it is on a dresser or bedside table.
These signed Martz #141 lamp come in a matte black/dark brown/gray glaze. This is the Martz black glaze, but know that it is not a deep-deep black and has hints of brown / gray in it in brighter light. But it should read as a certain black unless placed against lots of other black objects. The ceramic body gives way to a thin walnut neck and the whole ensemble is capped off with the famous Martz walnut finial.
Martz / Marshall Studios 101
—
Jane Marshall—whose grandmother founded Marshall Studios in 1922—married Gordon Martz in 1951, a year before the couple graduated from New York’s Alfred University. They returned to Veedersburg to work in the family business, bringing with them a passion for contemporary hand-designed stoneware.
The Martzes’ work transformed Marshall Studios. What had been a lampshade manufacturing company became a hotbed of handcrafted modern lamps and accessories. Martz lamp bases were slip-cast for mass production and later decorated by hand using techniques such as incising, dipping, and brushing to create a variety of patterns and colors.
Martz lamps have been featured in the Museum of Modern Art, a growing number of private collections and are the darling of the French modernist auction scene.
Condition
—
Great condition!
Wooden necks have been refinished. All new hardware and cords.
There are two small imperfections that are from the firing process on the tops of both lamps.
On one, there is a ripple / wave in the glaze right where the neck meets the lamp body.
On two, there is a few small dots of material that remain unglazed on the top of the lamp. Tiny, you'd likely never see it while there's a shade on the lamp / the lamp is in use.
