About the Item

WHAT IS IT? — This pair of Martz model no. 165-28-1 lamps arrives with white glaze bodies that are decorated with a top-to-bottom incised line pattern. The lamps are topped off with large, turned sculptural walnut necks. The glaze of the lamps is "white" but has a slight hint of grayish blue to it. The incised areas reveal the tan/gray clay body. These lamps were sourced from the original owners, and are a true set, but have very slight differences in height—natural to the process of handmade goods. These lamps are fairly tall and would make an excellent statement in your room design. These would work best on end tables in a larger space or paired up on a credenza. This model of lamp first appeared in the Spring 1957 catalog, and in this exact configuration in fall of the same year. This particular set came with one (just one! the other is photoshopped in) original shade in the taller 15x15x16 size that was found in the 1960s. MARTZ / MARSHALL STUDIOS 101 — Jane Marshall—whose grandmother founded Marshall Studios in 1922—married Gordon Martz in 1951, a year before the couple graduated from New York’s Alfred University. They returned to Veedersburg, Indiana to work in the family business, bringing with them a passion for contemporary hand-designed stoneware. The Martz's work transformed Marshall Studios. What had been a lampshade manufacturing company became a hotbed of handcrafted modern lamps and accessories. Martz lamp bases were slip-cast for mass production and later decorated by hand using techniques such as incising, dipping, and brushing to create a variety of patterns and colors. Martz lamps have been featured in the Museum of Modern Art, a growing number of private collections and are the darling of the French modernist auction scene. CONDITION — Both lamps are in excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks, dings, etc. New sockets and hardware. While there is only one (1) original shade remaining, I will include new shades matching the dimensions seen in the catalogs or within these photos. Your choice.
