H57 Boudoir table lamp with a bronze finial in recycled cast bronze and hand blown glass with a deep oxblood lip wrap, by Jordan Mozer (b.1958). Made in Chicago, 2007. Measurements; 17” tall x 5” diameter (43 cm tall x 12.7cm diameter). This blown glass and cast bronze H57 Boudoir lamp was created by the artist in 2007 for the renovation of Manhattan hotel on 57th Street between Lexington and Park Avenue. Process and materials This boudoir lamp body was created by hand-carving maple wood. Each leg varies slightly by design. The carving was cast in 95% recycled red-bronze, which was then hand polished and bathed in elixirs and flames to patina the metal. Glass was blown by hand for the lamp shade: each piece of glass is unique. The cord is dressed in a shirred "sweater". Wiring is acceptable for commercial use. The apple blossom finial is also composed of recycled red bronze. Story The lamps were created for Jordan Mozer and Associates, Ltd.’s renovation of a 1920s Hotel on 57th street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue in New York. The building was originally built by a upper east side fashion designer named Blum as a residence for women in the arts and academia, an alternative to the women's boarding houses typical of the period. The property was purchased by Apple Real Estate. The lamp embodies the hotel design themes: the vertical lines of 1920s fashion design; the handmade idiosyncrasy of the building; the apple blossom finial, riffing on the names of the owners (Blum and Apple). Like other aspects of the design, the lamp was fashioned to take the edge off a neighbourhood dominated by commerce with a little eccentric personality. We invite our patrons to embrace the nuanced irregularities of form, surface and finish as evidence of that handwork, defining each piece as one of a kind.
