About the Item

HEIFETZ MANUFACTURING, CO. 1951 MOMA LIGHTING COMPETITION ARTICULATING DESK/TABLE LAMP DESIGNER: JOHN VAN ZWIENEN Dimensions: Approximately 24" Tall By 18" Wide In 1951 MOMA sponsored a modern lighting competition, the winners were produced by Heifetz Manufacturing. This produced a number of now iconic mid century modern lamps. This lamp is the T-7-Z which won an honorable mention. Very few of these were manufactured. It's been estimated there may be 5-10 examples left of perhaps 25-30 sold . They were only sold through a very few select department stores (24 locations nationwide) for a short time, in 1951, that agreed to feature the MOMA lighting competition display. Interestingly, all surviving examples differ somewhat from the MOMA archived images. The MOMA press release mentions that all the lamps sold vary somewhat from the original contest entries and "had to be adjusted for economy of manufacture" and "improved performance" Understandably, these lamps were quite unusual for 1951 and also were quite expensive (around $25 or $310 today) and this likely also contributed to the extremely low sales & production. A solid wood base with a swiveling device permits the adjustment of a brass arm with a lamp socket and adjustable shade. Lamp shows age appropriate wear to brass and wood. Fresh replacement paper shade. Truly a magnificent lamp and a mid century modern icon. Perhaps the most functional of all the lighting competition lamp designs, it was also designed by the youngest entrant - 21 year old John Van Zwienen. A very rare opportunity and a must have acquisition for your NY penthouse, Palm Springs atomic ranch West Palm Beach estate!
