Impressive Italian Acrylic Light Sculpture in the Style of Gianfranco Fini, 1969

$7,000

About

Stunning acrylic and stainless steel Italian light sculpture. from the period 1968-1972 of an impressive scale , very much in the style of the fabulous light sculptures that Italian artist and architect Gianfranco Fini designed for the Italian Avant Garde lighting company 'Newlamp' during the period 1968-1971. The interlocking cube forms also clearly show the influence of Josef Albers' geometric artworks especially his 1950s monochrome 'structural constellation' series with nods also to the 1960s geometric cubic artworks of Sol Lewitt. Please see black and white photo of Albers' 'two structural constellations' geometric mural finished in marble and gold leaf displayed in the lobby of the Corning glass building (New York) in 1959 (please see image 2). Closer to home there is also the influence of Italian artist Gianni Colombo's 1967 'spazio elastico' (elastic space) installations, Colombo interestingly also designed a light sculpture for the company 'newlamp' and was a friend of Gianfranco Fini, they both exhibited pieces at Nancy Marotta's (wife of Gino Marotta) renowned 'Mana Art Market' gallery in Rome in the late 1960s-early 1970s period. Please see period photos of Colombo's 1967 installation, see last two black and white images. The transparent acrylic sculpture creates a stunning lighting effect as the edges of the plexiglass appear to magically capture and hold the light emitting from the base creating a wonderful geometric interplay of light and form. The sculpture holds real presence in a room even when not illuminated, a very beautiful and elegant minimalist geometric form. The base is beautifully fabricated from stainless steel and contains two concentric circular fluorescent tubes which are hidden from sight beneath an opaque white acrylic sheet diffuser, this diffuser in turn supports the transparent acrylic sculpture. This construction is very similar in particular to that of Gianfranco Fini's equally stunning 'interior' and 'logos' lamps which he designed for 'Newlamp' during 1969-1970 although this lamp we offer is of a considerably bigger scale. This was a very fertile and imaginative period of Italian design with a lot of cross pollination of ideas between art, design, literature, philosophy and music. I have never seen another example of this light sculpture so I am fairly confident that it is probably a one off piece designed by an Italian artist during the period 1968-1972 when this style and materials were particularly in vogue. The fluorescent tubes and fittings also date from this period and the acrylic has signs of light surface scratches and a small internal crack commensurate with fifty years of UV exposure and use. Condition: The transparent acylic sculpture has a small internal crack in the corner of one of the internal cubic acrylic elements, this really does not detract from the beauty of the piece and is very small in comparison to the overall scale of the sculpture so is really not that noticeable at all unless you search for it and know it is there. There is some light surface scratching on the external faces of the acrylic light sculpture as already mentioned which again do not detract from the effect and presence of the work. Please examine images and video closely.
