About the Item
A Japanese hand painted earthenware vase mounted as Lamp.
Of fluted ovoid form painted in imitation of cloisonné enamel with panels of figures and animals in a garden within fluted strapwork borders, mounted as a lamp base.
c. Late 19th or early 20th century.
During the latter part of the 19th century a number of Japanese potteries began to make wares specifically for export to the West and this vase appears to be such a piece. This vase was made in the latter part of the 19th century or into the 20th century and the decoration is in imitation of cloisonné which is a technique where wires are used to separate different coloured enamels to create a decorative effect, on a metal, usually copper, base.
