The hand embroidered, whimsical motif in the centre panel has a chinoiserie feel, that emanates sophistication. The matt finished globe sits gracefully atop the embroidered panel, which is inspired by the mythological peacock, inspired by one of the most famous Chinese fables called ‘Classic of Mountains and Seas’, which is a colourful tale of mythic creatures, rituals and medicine. The embroidery is handmade by artists in China, and the technique is called Su embroidery.

This leopard motif is inspired by the ranking symbol embroidered on the government officials’ gowns during the Qing Dynasty. Other animals such as, crane, dragon and phoenix were used to signify different ranks. Leopard is a sacred animal in Ancient Chinese culture, which represents strength, and perseverance. The composition of this lamp is inspired by one of Michelangelo’s iconic paintings - “The Creation of Adam”. The crane represents nature and the hand symbolises humanity. The crane is positioned at a higher level because mankind is always fascinated and inspired by nature. It also shows our coexistence with nature as one cannot challenge the balance between the two elements. The hand embroidered design is created by the most skilled of artisans, it is finished off with a Deco inspired shape, with a touch of veneered cobalt blue bird’s eye maple, which maximises the elegance of the illumination. The base is finished with a black patina and cut from 90mm thick steel billet. Markings from the process are visible and intentionally left, exposing the character of the material. A square block of Travertine slots into the steel base. The opal glass diffuser is hand blown with a matte finish. The concept was to design a lamp triptych (circle, triangle and square) made out of high quality materials for a formal interior space. A triptych of varying forms, colors and textures could create a 'common ground' throughout a space, whilst also working as individual lamps. Inspiration has come from architectural forms such as monoliths and monuments, implemented through the design with heavy, robust materials and simple geometric forms.
