About the Item

This very high quality leaded glass lamp was manufactured by the noted company Duffner & Kimberly. Those who get interested in leaded glass table lamps from the early 20th century will undoubtedly learn how important this company was to this genre of lamps. They were in competition with Tiffany and had a showroom in Manhattan. We need not go into their history, as it is quite involved. You can learn much about them on the internet, or even better, purchase the book "Mosaic Shades, Vol II" by Paul Crist. Several examples of this well regarded lamp are pictured in the book on pg. 211, as is a detailed account of the company's history. This lamp still sits in our home and after many years of seeing this same lamp in various colors, we found the one we liked the best. The red lilies were the richest example we had seen and the one we coveted. The light blue background glass is very beautiful, and rarely seen on other lamps. The lead work is wavy to provide a feeling of movement in the water, an especially smart idea that certainly adds to the mystique of the lamp. This lamp is one of the few that has a bronze base that was specifically made for it, also richly patinated, and with flowers and cattails makes for a perfect partner with this shade. Duffner & Kimberly manufactured some of the finest and most sought after leaded glass table lamps. We urge anyone interested to purchase this book that we mention. This company is the main focus of this book, and examples of their workmanship in design and color are a feast for the eyes. Their quality was head and shoulders above all the other makers, and many feel their workmanship was on a par with Tiffany. While their better lamps were not inexpensive, they do not as a rule sell for nearly as much as a Tiffany lamp of similar size.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. There are a few pieces with hairline cracks, as is the usual case on these lamps. With over 600 pieces of glass, a few hairlines shouldn't bother any buyers. We have sold hundreds of leaded glass lamps and that is how they are normally found.
