About the Item

A simple but striking modernist desk lamp with large saucer-shaped shade. Manufactured by LBL of Germany. Designed 1950s; this model is dated 1962. Unusual to see a lamp of this style in such a large size (approximately 43cm shade). Overall the lamp is in good condition with age-related wear throughout as one might expect - see images for examples and overview. The shade has kept a good shape, with only minor signs of movement; the outer shade has been refinished in the past, otherwise the paintwork looks to be original. The brass stem has a nice patina, and the lamp is labelled to the underside. Wiring/Bulb: The original wiring has been replaced with black flex, and a new black/brass switch installed; we advise testing/replacement is carried out in the country of install to meet local needs and regulations. The original bulb-holder takes an E27 bulb and we recommend the use of a low-heat model to protect the fixture for the future. Approximate dimensions: Height 43cm x width 45cm (when shade is as shown in the main picture) Depth 43cm (equivalent to the diameter of the shade). The shade can be removed for transit. LBL (short for VEB Leuchtenbau Leipzig) emerged from the Kandem business which was associated with the Bauhaus in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Designers who worked with the company included Marianne Brandt.
