Temde Leuchten, a German-Swiss manufacturer of lighting fixtures, was founded by Fritz Müller in 1911, headquartered in Detmold (North Rhine-Westphalia) and subsidiary in Sevelen, Switzerland. In its early time, only wood (mostly teak) made lamps were made. Since the 1930s, Temde has also been producing lighting elements made of modern materials such as chrome and glass. However, wood is still the dominant part. Now in the vintage market, those non-wood lamps by Temde are of significant scarcity. Although Fritz Müller expanded the operational infrastructure and his company offered 250 basic models in the mid-1950’s, Temde did not profit so much from the general economic boom of the 1950s, and eventually filed for bankruptcy in 1986. Temde was mostly regarded as a very “utopian” brand of its time, with its uncompromised and advanced unique style, highly independent designing process, and superb turn-out quality, hence the much higher cost and retail price. However, after decades, Temde’s lamps are worldwide pursued again by interior design lovers.
