About the Item
Large 1961 Royal Delft vase lamp with peacock motif, hand-painted in Delft Blue, paired with a mustard silk pleated lampshade by Amitābha Studio.
Meticulously handcrafted by Amitābha Studio from a large vintage 1961 Royal Delft (De Porceleyne Fles) ribbed baluster Delft blue and white ceramic vase, this lamp unites Dutch Delftware tradition with contemporary design. The tin-glazed earthenware body, hand-painted in cobalt blue by a Royal Delft master painter, depicts a single peacock standing among flowering shrubs. The ribbed form is framed with finely executed borders of lappet and pendant motifs, hallmarks of the factory’s long tradition of decorative precision.
Royal Delft, founded in 1653 and the last surviving 17th-century Delftware manufacturer, is celebrated worldwide for its mastery of blue and white ceramics. By the mid-20th century, the factory’s painters maintained the highest standards of their predecessors, producing works like this vase that combine bold scale with extraordinary detail. The peacock, a recurring motif in Delftware, has long symbolized beauty, renewal, and prosperity, making it a fitting emblem for collectors drawn to pieces that balance symbolic resonance with artistry.
Paired with a new mustard silk pleated lampshade, the lamp creates a striking dialogue between the crisp Delft Blue ceramic surface and the warm textile glow. The result is a blue and white ceramic lamp of exceptional presence, equally suited to historic or contemporary interiors.
This lamp would make a commanding focal point in a library, dining room, or entrance hall, where its scale, symbolic imagery, and interplay of ceramic and textile can be fully appreciated.
