Lotte and Gunnar Bostlund Lamp

About the Item

A rare mid-20th century table lamp in ceramic by Lotte and Gunnar Bostlund, recently rewired, model #302. White background with yellow, blue and grey stripes. Signed “Lotte” in the glaze. The History of Lotte Lamps and the Bostlund Family The Bostlund family originated in Copenhagen, Denmark, where the husband Gunnar trained at the Technical University as a ceramic engineer. His wife Lotte trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Danish School for Arts and Crafts. The original family business was in the production of techni- cal ceramics - namely porcelain insulators - until a factory fire destroyed the business in 1952. Lotte had been occupied with painting and raising her fledgling family at the time. As rebuilding anything in the years after WWII in Europe was a challenge, the young family decided to emigrate, and made a new home in Oak Ridges, near Toronto, Ontario. The husband and wife team began developing ceramic designs for Gunnar to produce, beginning with art pottery, including vases, teapots, and salt and pepper shakers. The very first lamps were produced in 1956. Two of the original three models continue in production today. By the early 1960's, their son Morten had developed the fiberglass lampshades, and the product we know as Lotte Lamps was now complete. The popularity of Danish Modern design helped propel the business to solid growth, and now employed all of the Bostlund children as well.
