About the Item

A sculptural and rare statement lamp by Maitland-Smith, crafted in the 1980s and exemplary of the firm’s signature blend of luxury materials and organic form. This dramatic design takes the shape of a stylized snail shell, executed in a refined tessellated marquetry of hand-cut pen shell — a natural material prized for its warm translucency and iridescent depth. When illuminated, the shell’s surface glows with deep browns, cocoa tones, and golden undertones, producing a soft ambient radiance that accentuates its sculptural silhouette. The form rests on a gently contoured plinth base of patinated bronze, its surface variegated with verdigris, soft greys, and burnished highlights — a rich, weathered finish that echoes the shell’s organic palette. Above, a cast bronze collar and stem rise in slender proportion, adding an architectural counterpoint to the base’s curvature. The lamp retains its original harp and hardware, and was crafted by hand in the Philippines by Maitland-Smith’s skilled artisans, whose work merges British Colonial and Hollywood Regency influences with collectible postmodern eccentricity. Often compared to Maitland-Smith’s iconic hot air balloon lamp, this “snail shell” model remains one of the firm’s most sought-after and imaginative designs — appealing to collectors of 1970s–1980s decorative arts, organic modern lighting, and eclectic statement pieces. Dimensions: Height: 84 cm (including harp) Width: 30 cm Depth: 15 cm Condition: Good vintage condition. Minor scuffing to the edge of the shell and light wear to the bronze base are noted, consistent with age and careful use.

Marcello Fantoni Signed Torched Bronze Table Lamp Mid-Century Modern Italian
By Marcello Fantoni
Located in North Miami, FL
This sculptural and monumental RARE Mid-Century Modern signed Italian amazing bronze lamp by the noted Italian artist; Marcello Fantoni was done in Florence, Italy for Raymor. Signed on the bottom as such. The machine spinning torch color bronze work creates a swirling effect that looks like abalone. This is a very hard process to do and in todays world not even feasible. No special artist even knows this process now or can replicate it. The scale is impressive, and the Greek key torched bronze design is so fantastic. It has the original milk glass carrier...
