Marshall Studios Martz Ceramic Triangular Incised Pottery Midcentury Table Lamp

About the Item

?? WHAT'S INCLUDED? — This listing is for the lamps only. New shades, exactly matching the catalog dimensions can be purchased upon request. ?? WHAT IS IT? — This absolutely gigantic Martz lamp comes in a white glaze with a variety of vertical incised lines and sgraffito pattern designs that cover all three surfaces of the lamp. The lamp is a tall, triangular shape and sits on a walnut block base. The wood of the base has been refinished, and wow - this is an incredible piece of wood. Amazing grain - it would be best to place this in an area you could possibly see one or more sides to appreciate its beauty. This is one of the largest designs Marshall Studios ever made (and possibly the largest single-piece design). Ideally, this lamp would be displayed in a large room with tall ceilings. A pure, simple timeless design. ?? MARTZ / MARSHALL STUDIOS 101 — Jane Marshall—whose grandmother founded Marshall Studios in 1922—married Gordon Martz in 1951, a year before the couple graduated from New York’s Alfred University. They returned to Veedersburg, Indiana to work in the family business, bringing with them a passion for contemporary hand-designed stoneware. The Martz's work transformed Marshall Studios. What had been a lampshade manufacturing company became a hotbed of handcrafted modern lamps and accessories. Martz lamp bases were slip-cast for mass production and later decorated by hand using techniques such as incising, dipping, and brushing to create a variety of patterns and colors. Martz lamps have been featured in the Museum of Modern Art, a growing number of private collections and are the darling of the French modernist auction scene. ?? CONDITION — This lamp has been broken. Like, very broken. It has been professionally repaired and is in stable condition. With the shade off, it's very obvious that this lamp has been repaired and some longer, stable cracks remain visible. But with the shade on the worst of the damage will be hidden. I bought this at an estate sale and didn't notice the damage until I took it home and looked closed with the shade off. But yes, if you take the shade off you're going to see it. ?? DIMENSIONS — Height from base to bulb socket: X Height to top of finial: 44" height.
