Martin Brothers Early Stoneware Oil Lamp Base with Butterflies

About the Item

A rare and early stoneware oil lamp base incised with butterflies by Robert Wallace Martin for the Martin Brothers dating from around 1873 when Martin Brothers were founded. The tall oil lamp stands on a wide circular base decorated in relief with patterned borders with a conical shaped hollowed out lower body decorated with a scale pattern. The round oil reservoir is incised with butterflies on a patterned ground and sits raised on four blue glazed serpentine supports which rest on the lower body. The lamp is decorated in brown and blue glazes and has incised marks RW Martin and No 1 and possibly the first piece made by him. Provenance: Acquired directly from a private American collection. The oil lamp base has been professionally and sympathetically restored with firing cracks to the body and base. Nonetheless a rare and possibly and important item which displays well.

    A rare Martin Brothers miniature stoneware art pottery vase decorated in brown glazes by Walter Martin and believed to date from the 19th century. This lovely little vase is of rounded bulbous with a narrow rounded foot and a funnel shaped neck with rounded opening. The vase is decorated in brown glazes with a slight textured finish in places with an exposed underlying white glaze revealed around the foot and top rim.
