About the Item

Mercury lamp in sand and rust by Elyse Graham Dimensions: D26 x H51 cm Materials: Plaster, Resin, Cotton rag Paper, brass, Nickel. Hardware: Polished nickel-plated brass UNO threaded socket with turn key switch, in-line dimmer. molded, dyed, and finished by hand in LA. customization available. all pieces are made to order. All our lamps can be wired according to each country. If sold to the USA it will be wired for the USA for instance. This collection of lamps is inspired by striated landscapes caused by glacial erosion as well as the beautiful colors found in foliated metamorphic rock and the play of light along the horizon at dawn and dusk. The base of each lamp is hand-cast with hydrocal plaster inside of a unique balloon shape. The interior of each piece is poured with layers of resin, impregnating the plaster with added strength and hardness. Finally, each base is hand-dyed by the artist with layer after layer of custom mixed pigments and then sealed with a UV resistant acrylic coating. Our shades are made by hand using a heavyweight cotton rag paper and attached to a nickel-plated swivel fixture with a turn switch. An in-line dimmer switch on the cord provides adjustable light settings. Due to the nature of the UV sensitive materials in our lamp bases we recommend using LED lightbulbs exclusively. Meet Our Team Elyse Graham is the founder and creative director of the studio. Driven by Elyse’s unique vision of building a studio that fosters and emphasizes connection, play, and experimentation (of people, processes, and in turn the objects created and shared) our small team works closely and collaboratively on each project. Elyse received a BA in sculpture and semiotics at Brown University. After years of making sculpture and running a business in jewelry design, Elyse decided to merge her separate practices and redirect her attention toward collectible design in 2013. The creative trajectory of the studio is heavily influenced by Graham’s background in fine art, specifically her interest in process-driven and material-based artwork. The studio’s vocabulary of shapes, patterns, and forms comes from a lineage of unconventional processes Graham has developed and built for working with plaster and resin. Graham shares her studio as well as her home with her husband, Lewis Mauk and their daughter, Eero. Miller Robinson is head of our production department. From pigmenting and casting materials for all of our products in plaster and resin to graphic and production design, they wear many hats in our studio. Miller joined our team in 2014 and has been an integral part of designing many of our experimental processes that have lead to the creation of our unique MetaMATERIAL. Like Elyse, Miller has a background in material and process-oriented making, which led to an instant connection and collaborative understanding between the two. Miller received their BFA from Otis College of Art and Design with a focus on painting, installation, performance, and writing. Their individual art practice focuses on the preservation and potentialities of underrepresented histories and encompasses objects, garments, actions, tattooing, and books. Their personal work has been exhibited in Los Angeles at the Southwest Museum, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, Heritage Square Museum, and with Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), as well as HORESEANDPONY Fine Arts in Berlin. Lewis Mauk is our studio and operations engineer. Working on facilities and production design as well as engineering and leading all of our large-scale constructions and installations, Lewis’ unique set of technical skills gives form and structure to our studio’s unconventional ideas and processes. Lewis has been working behind-the-scenes since the creation of the studio but joined our team full-time in 2020. Consistent with the rest of our team, Lewis has a background in process-driven fine art and has extensive training in woodworking, printmaking, and photography. He received a MFA from CalArts and has worked across the fields of education and fabrication. Lewis’ combined interest in the creation of personal archives mixed with his commitment to sustainable life practices, has brought a focus and important emphasis on designing studio projects and processes that imagine ways to reduce and reuse studio material fragments.

Christopher Russell, Sepia Form Lamp, USA
By Christopher Russell
Located in New York, NY
In a career spanning over 30 years, New York City artist Christopher Russell has devoted himself to creating unique works of art, functional design, custom architectural elements, and large-scale commissions in an ever-expanding exploration of clay, his principal medium. Originally focused on painting and drawing, Russell was attracted to the malleable properties and endless possibilities of clay, which can traverse the divide between functional and purely aesthetic. Initially translating his draftsmanship to decorative graphic tiles, his work eventually progressed into hand-built sculpture, and most recently decorative vessels. His latest works are dynamic in structure and decoration. With a concentration on hand-building, something the artist attributes to a familial connection to architecture, engineering, and contracting, Russell eschews throwing pots “on the wheel”. While his geometrically rigid vessels look meticulously planned, the process is generally spontaneous. Process dictates the abstracted forms, but the ultimate goal is largely towards harmony, balance, and symmetry. Most notable in the recent works is Russell’s energetic surface ornamentation. Patchworks of simple shapes, in hues ranging from natural to artificial, jostle and hug to create cubist patterns akin to pictographs. A combination of black and white underglazes acts as a ground for his precise application of colored glazes, each individually developed by the artist. Employing stencil resists and decorative sgraffito results in work with an unexpected sense of depth. Equally varied are the competing textures that converge across each surface. Russell affirms that “Texture is the most visceral element in ceramics. It’s the thing that makes you want to touch. There’s design, color and form, but it’s texture that gives a piece its physical life.” Conclusively the agony and joy in his ceramic practice comes from what is left to chance. Best laid plans are at the mercy of the kiln, making each work a risky venture and each success a treasurable object. Russell has been the subject of solo shows at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse NY, and the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art in Sedalie WI. His work has also been exhibited widely in group exhibitions, including at The Bernardaud Foundation in Limoges, France, the Royal West Academy in Bristol, England, the Paul Robeson Gallery at Rutgers University, and WaveHill, the prestigious public gardens in The Bronx, New York. Among numerous private collections his work is also in the collection of Longhouse Reserve: The Jack Lenor Larsen Estate. Notable commissions include a large-scale ceramic wall mural...
