Mid Century Aluminum Table Reflector Lamp Shade Poul Henningsen Danish Design

About the Item

ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ALUMINUM LAMPS IN THE WORLD! BAUHAUS/ ART DECO STYLE! AFTER POUL HENNINGSEN PH5 ALUMINUM REFLECTOR SHADE LIGHT DIFFUSING STYLE TABLE/DESK LAMP! (APPROX. 19.5" TALL By 15" WIDE ) This is one marvelous lamp. Here is an all aluminum table lamp clearly derived (inspired) from the Louis Henningsen 1958 PH5 ceiling lamp! Louis Poulsen was as curious as we were and did us the kind service of taking a week and checking all their catalogs and archives to see if it was one of their designs, but could find no evidence of any PH5 table lamp designs like this. We have never seen another like it in all our years, so we know it is incredibly scarce - possibly one of a kind. Based on the materials we are assuming it was made circa 1960 - slightly after Henningsen introduced the PH5 and in the wake of its surging popularity. The quality of this lamp is off the charts! Hard to perform aluminum sculpting and a design that is impeccable! The top diffusing dish visually extends from the tapering base - like it were a single piece penetrating the reflector shade! Nothing so crude as a switch was permitted to interrupt the smooth lines of the beautifully molded base and a cord switch was employed to keep anyone from having to touch the lamp base or bump into the shade fumbling for a socket switch. The result of this attention to detail has kept this lamp in excellent condition for almost 65 years! Aluminum is marvelous with only light age wear. It shows age, but much less than is warranted! This lamp is imposing in all regards. The light manipulation and diffusing effect of the light emerging from the top and bottom is in keeping with Henningsen's quest for light diffusion and no glare. The size of the lamp is deceptively large. One simply doesn't come across any nearly 20 inch tall reflector lamps that are 15 inches wide. It's just...beautiful. Whoever is lucky enough to acquire this magnificent lamp will have a very rare treasure worthy of a design museum. An incredible addition to your New York penthouse, Frankfurt Apartment, or West Palm Beach estate!

The MOMA Lighting Design competition of 1951 would almost exclusively showcase designs that were based on reflection technology. This beautiful lamp features a sweeping brushed brass neck and articulating fiberglass shade reflector. The black enameled cone is complemented by a matching black decorative trim on the base. It is in very fine vintage condition. It has light age-appropriate wear. It presents splendidly, This lamp creates a warm cozy space in any interior. Moss lamps were more about mood than function. By Poul Henningsen, Louis Poulsen

The louvre is 100% glare-free, with a design based on the principle of a reflective three-shade system, which directs most of the light downwards. For some variants, the top shade is made of deep drawn aluminum with white inner surface that ensures gentle, downward light distribution. The two bottom handblown opal glass shades ensure a large glare-free light surface, making optimum use of the light source to provide comfortable, functional lighting. The PH 3½-2½ Glass Table lamp was designed in 1928 and is one of many advanced projects undertaken by Poul Henningsen in the development of his world-famous three-shade system from 1926. Poul Henningsen devoted most of his life to taming electric light. He based his three-shade design on a logarithmic spiral to make optimum use of the light source. He was constantly doing calculations and tests. The form of the shades was determined by the way they were required to shape and reflect the light, and the lamp was designed to be glare-free. The first PH Table lamp...
