Elsi Bourelius (1909–2001) Elsi Margaretha Bourelius, born Wahlquist in Kalmar, Sweden, on 8 April 1909, was a Swedish ceramist and painter known for her refined glazes and elegant, often figurative ceramic works. She studied at the Higher School of Industrial Art in Stockholm (now Konstfack) from 1929 to 1934, followed by studies in Berlin through a scholarship from the Swedish Society of Crafts. After gaining experience at Steninge Keramik and Gabrielverken, she founded her own workshop in Stockholm’s Old Town in 1937—the same year she married Kewe Bourelius. After moving to Tullinge and later to Gårdarp in Skåne, Bourelius developed a distinctive style that blended functional design with artistic expression. Her production ranged from vases and bowls to sculptural figures and wall plaques. She was particularly admired for her mastery of glaze, which gave her pieces their characteristic luster and subtle color variations. Bourelius also designed for the ceramics firm Jie Gantofta, producing several well-known decorative figures. From the late 1960s, she collaborated with her daughter Margareta Bourelius, who eventually took over the family workshop under the name Bourelius Keramik. Elsi Bourelius remained active well into her later years and passed away on 26 May 2001. Her work reflects the Swedish studio-ceramics tradition’s balance between artistry and utility, and she remains appreciated for her craftsmanship, distinctive glazes, and contribution to mid-20th-century Scandinavian design.
