Mid Modern Century Touch-Dimmer Opaline Glass Lamp 1971 Italian ITER Elettronica
An icon of early ’70s Italian innovation, this ITER Elettronica table lamp marries rationalist form with pioneering touch-dimming technology. Crafted circa 1971 in Italy, its 36 cm-diameter opaline glass globe is encircled by a polished chrome band and supported by two sturdy chrome-plated metal rods rising from a glossy black metal base.
Beneath the chrome ring sits a capacitive “touch” dimmer: a gentle tap instantly varies the light output from soft ambient glow to full brightness, demonstrating ITER’s forward-looking approach to user interaction. The lamp retains its original “ITER” logo label on the glass and is documented in Light, Lamps 1968–1973: New Italian Design by Ferrari & Ferrari (fig. 69). At 57 cm high × 36 cm wide × 39 cm deep, it’s both a functional lighting solution and a collectible example of retro-futurist design.
