About the Item

TABLE LAMP MILANO - Limited Borsani Edition 1/7 - No. 3 The new table lamp MILANO by Fabian Freytag Studio is a fascinating example of how artificial intelligence and traditional craftsmanship can harmoniously collaborate. The design of the lamp originally came about by a stroke of luck: While working on the Callwey book „Gently Radical Interior Design,“ a visual concept was generated using the AI platform Midjourney. This concept was so impressive that it inspired the studio to translate the image into real technical drawings. The greatest challenge in realizing the design was the glass lampshade. First, a suitable wooden mold had to be developed to facilitate the production of the glass. Additionally, the energy crisis significantly complicated the search for a suitable glassworks. Ultimately, Fabian Freytag Studio found the ideal partner in the renowned traditional brand Kosta Boda to bring the vision to life. The dialogue with the AI proved to be a valuable enrichment for the studio’s design process. When AI inspires us to celebrate craftsmanship and traditional production processes, we experience a pinnacle of design. The studio plans to intensify this innovative approach. During the development process, seven prototypes with various material combinations, including wood, metal, and natural stone, as well as two different heights, were created. The series product will feature the taller version with a combination of wood, natural stone, and an opaque lampshade. The official presentation of the lamp took place during the MILAN DESIGN WEEK 2024 Alcova Milano at Villa Borsani. A noteworthy anecdote: The grandson of the famous architect & designer Osvaldo Borsani was so impressed with the lamp that he purchased two pieces even before the exhibition began. He remarked that these lamps fit perfectly with the villa, which is almost magical – a design created with the help of AI fits seamlessly into a villa from the 1940s.
