About the Item

Based on the classic oil lamp, this model “B255” table lamp is a lovely design combining traditional and modern lighting design. The design is therefore derivative of a traditional aesthetic with a modern sensibility, mixed with an extensive use of glass and brass as its materials. According to the story, this model was originally developed as an oil lamp for a hotel in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a marine theme. Later, the series was completed with this modernized, electric version. Resulting from its history, this model retains the classic oil lamp’s structure with a brass body, collar, and even a lamp chimney. Preserving the latter element in particular shows that Jakobsson created this model to be the modern iteration of the oil lamp. The brass base is paired with a milk glass shade that contrast beautifully against the golden hue of the body. Milk glass, appropriately named for its opaque or transparent pure ivory white tone, was first created in Venice in the 16th century, known as Lattimo. At that time, it was widely used for decorative purposes and continued to be popular during the 20th century when the material was used to decorate households as home accents. When lit, the large glass surface lights up in orange light that accentuates the shape of the shade as well as the brass. The collar or neck of the lamp is perforated with an ornate pattern running around. The design is completed with a twisted fabric chord that adds additional material interest to the design. True to Hans-Agne Jakobsson’s design vision, this table lamp model utilizes its quality materials to create a soft quality of light. This “B255” table lamp was created at his own famed workshop in Markaryd, Sweden where the Swedish designer and cabinetmaker gave shape to most of his era defining creations. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The brass has a beautiful patina with some marks. Dimensions: 5.9 in ⌀ x 9.44 in H 15 cm ⌀ x 24 cm H About the designer: Born in 1919 in Gotland, Sweden, Hans Agne Jakobsson is one of the most well-known Swedish lighting designers. He did his carpenter apprenticeship before studying architecture in Gothenburg. First working as an industrial designer for General Motors, he later founded his own company after being an assistant to the designers Carl Malmsten and Werner West. In 1950, due to Christmas, he added a model of hanging lamps in small strips of pine in one of his stores to soften the lively lighting of the shop window. The people who were passing by were immediately seduced by this hanging lamp, which started it all. He established his own company in 1951: Hans Agne Jakobsson AB and began producing this model in his factories and achieved success abroad as well. In 50 years, he designed more than 2000 lamps with unique designs. He used materials and experimented with multiple techniques, for example using fabrics with fringes, blown glass of colour and smoked glass. His great diversity resulted in a wide range of timeless lighting models. These pieces continue to seduce design lovers, as they adapt themselves to any interior, without blending into the background. Today, Jakobsson’s works can be found in private homes as well as public institutions throughout Sweden. The designer passed away in 2009 in Sweden, leaving behind a great legacy. ~H.
