Monumental South Pacific Bamboo 1940s Table Lamp Tiki Rattan McGuire

About the Item

MONUMENTAL BAMBOO & WALNUT POLYNESIAN STYLE TABLE LAMP In the Manner of McGuire & Wakefield Circa 1947-1950 At the very beginning of the Post-War Polynesian or South Pacific craze which took over America during the late forties and fifties, there were precious few importers of fine bamboo furnishings. John & Elinore McGuire set up shop in California to do just that and their works are legendary for quality and durabiity. The time required to cut, soak, bend and shape bamboo into permanently sculpted forms was substantial and the exotic material was only available in quantity in the South Pacific. This lamp is an extremely rare, early example of a Bamboo lamp done in Polynesian (later Tiki) style. You seldom see any of these lamps, because they were very scarce new and even fewer have survived the past 70 years since their manufacture. It was likely created & imported in very small numbers around 1950 and sold through an early importer such as McGuire. Many bamboo importers were direct-to-decorator importers who advertised in Interiors or House & Garden magazine. The shape is based on the style of bamboo work used to create thatched huts and housing in the South Pacific islands - bamboo, cut, soaked and shaped and then tied with cane binding. This one has a double stacked oversized walnut base to provided stability to this enormous lamp. Here we have this wonderful, arched, triangular shape that at its base is accompanied by a cut bamboo vase which can be used as a planter. In the 1948-1955 period it was not unusual to see lamps merged with a planter to provide a lighted location for flowers or decorative greenery. This design experienced a rush of popularity in the Tiki-revival of the 2000s, exhausting the supply of the few that remained in the marketplace. It was considered "the most Tiki" of all Tiki lamps ever made. Now it's almost unobtainable at any price. The Post-War desire to seek and create an idyllic paradise, such as the mythical Bali Ha'i island, spurred a whole style that encompassed all income brackets and social classes. In the forties, it started with McGuire and influential designers like Robsjohn Gibbings. In the seventies, Italian designer Gabriella Crespi would revive the Bamboo phenomenon with her "Rising Sun" series and bamboo furnishings. She would merge the natural strength of bamboo with brass to create a new take on the material. Bamboo is forever timeless and quality pieces, like this remarkable lamp, remain a luxury ingredient in the finest interior design. A superb acquisition for your Palm Springs atomic ranch, La Jolla beachfront home or West Palm Beach estate!
