About the Item

Brillo floor lamp designed by Carlo Nason and manufactured by A.V. Mazzega Italy, 1960. The lamp consists of two spherical Murano blown glasses and connected in the middle by a chromed cylinder, which fixed them with a rotating system. Very nice contrast with the white and yellow colored tones. The lamp is in excellent condition. All our lamps are checked, cleaned and suitable for use in the USA. Carlo Nason: Born in Murano in 1935, he grew up in one of the oldest families of Murano glassmakers where experts introduced him to the most refined techniques. In the 1960s he worked for the family glass factory Nason & C. Soon he started collaborating with other glass studios, paying special attention to modern design and achieving a combination of technique and craftsmanship that characterizes all his projects. Carlo has always demonstrated an attitude for innovation without losing its tradition. From 1965 to 1980 he designed the complete collection of AV Mazzega, which today is an icon of vintage: creating the highest quality at the level of its design. Carlo Nason designed for De Majo, Leucos, Alt Lucialternative, Gallery Vetri D`Arte, Murano Due, Vetreria Vistosi, Vetreria Carlo Moretti, Vetreria Livio Seguso, Gruppo Firme di Vetro di Salzano and several other companies. Not only did he design glass objects, he designed ceramics for Baldelli, ski boots for Garmont; consultant for Casinos Austria International in Vienna and worked on graphics for several companies. iTRE In 1975 he founded his own company iTRE. Since 2002, the company has been owned by FDV Group S.p.A., better known as LEUCOS. Many well-known designers worked for the company iTRE. Not only is he a designer, he is also passionate about photography, winning numerous competitions in the 60's and 70's. Carlo's work can be found in various museums. The Museum of Modern Art MoMA in New York, USA, the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, Italy. The Corning Museum of Glass in New York has a large collection of his works.

A mid-century modern reference for today’s Murano glassmakers, Carlo Nason influenced the current tradition of glassmaking on an island renowned for it for hundreds of years. Celebrated for their exceptional designs, Nason’s lighting fixtures are sought after by collectors worldwide.

Learning to design and craft pieces from the family vetreria — rather than partaking in any formal training — Nason was working with the maestros at his family’s company furnace, V. Nason & C., attached to their family home by the time he was 11 years old. Although his roots are in Murano glassmaking, he took inspiration from the clean lines and natural colors of the Japanese metal vases he had seen in his youth at Milanese fairs.

Wanting to produce modern glass lamps, Nason worked with his family friend Gianni Mazzega of Mazzega Murano. The 1970s and 1980s were productive and creative years for Nason as the sole and independent designer at Mazzega Murano. His prolific career has also seen him design for other lighting manufacturers like I TRE, Murano Due and Kalmar.

After a mere four years as a glassmaker, Carlo Nason had his creations displayed at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York. The credit for the artisan’s pieces that were included in “Glass 1959” went to his family’s company, but the designs were all authored by Carlo.

Stepping away from the traditional, vibrant Murano stylings, Nason kept true to his inspiration, working with modern and simple forms that are relatively free of color. Nason told Palainco in a rare 2019 interview that his emotions inspired the shapes. And his legacy includes fixtures that are irreplicable and unreproducible, too — Nason made lighting pieces with multiple layers of glass that would be too costly or difficult to recreate today, and some designs were made with processes and materials now unavailable or banned in the glassmaking world.
