Museum Quality Measuring Instrument, PH & F. Pellin, Paris, circa 1900

About

This authentic measuring instrument from PH & F. Pellin comes from Paris, France. The PH & F. Pellin company was known worldwide for making scientific instruments and lenses. The company was founded at the end of 1700 under the name Soleil, named after the founder François Soleil. François Soleil mainly produced high-quality lenses for optical measuring instruments. But name recognition came about mainly after his work for the French scientist Augustin Jean Fresnel (The first scientist who could indicate that light could be seen as waves). Soleil had to develop special lenses for lighthouses for him. After these lenses were a success, everyone wanted work from Soleil. From entire scientific measuring instruments to even the lenses for the lamps on top of the Arc de Triomph! The success of the company continued for years. They were so good that the company often also brought out its own designs that were much more modern and convenient than other models of the time. For example, measuring instruments that were more accurate than the original, or a new method to read a certain value from a substance. In 1886 the company was finally taken over by PH & F. Pellin (the first successors who did not belong to the Soleil family), who continued the tradition of making optical measuring instruments. This lasted until 1941 when Felix Pellin died and the company was merged with Société Industrielle d’Instruments de Précision. The instruments of the company are very scarce nowadays and can only be seen in museums. This model has withstood the test of time very well. The parts function properly, and even all the numbers on the brass parts can be read perfectly. The lamps work and the instruments can be precisely maneuvered on the guided rails. A piece of quality like this was very valuable at the time, even today it would be very expensive to have it made.
