"Nude Hunter with Stag and Hounds, " Bronze and Marble Table Lamp by Oscar Bach

About the Item

One of the great masterworks of American Art Deco, and probably unique in Oscar Bach's oeuvre, this large bronze and marble table lamp depicts two nude male figures, accompanied by several hounds, on the hunt for a stag in the forest. The deeply-incised bronze work is gorgeous, and the scene is highly evocative of Medieval and Renaissance precedents. Bach's work showed the strong influence of both Arts & Crafts and Art Deco aesthetics, and here he brings these styles together in a masterful way. The base is a tan-colored marble inset with ceramic cabochons. The bottom of the base is marked with Oscar Bach's metal tag. Bach was, along with Samuel Yellin, one of America's premier metalworkers in the 1920s and 1930s, he crafted enormous metal sculptures designed by Hildreth Meière for Radio City Music Hall, as well as countless sculptures, lighting fixtures and furniture for wealthy homeowners and institutions across America. The lamp base is 18.5" high; including the top final, it is 29" high.
