About the Item

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Authentic mid-century so called "fat lava" lamps in ceramic like this one rarely come up for sale since they are very sought after not only by mid-century modern aficionados but also by pottery collectors. Often pieces from this period come in shades of brown, orange or red with very characteristic (and somewhat strange) shapes, not always easy to fit in a contemporary space. However, this is an exception. This authentic, vintage lamp base has the fun oversized format and typical holes of the mid-century era but with simple curves, a smooth surface and a color that really make it easy to style in a more contemporary interior. Due to its impressive size, it can be used either as a table lamp or as a floor lamp. Definitely a fun, hight decorative, mid-century modern statement lamp. The base is made from white clay, covered in several layers of beautiful smooth green/blue/turquoise glazes. The holes cover the widest part of the base in an irregular pattern. Like many other fat lava ceramic lamps from this period, it has no maker's marks or other markings. Despite extensive research, I have not been able to find any other samples of this unique, oversized, streamlined model. Most likely, the base was made in West Germany, Austria or Scandinavia during the 1960s. The lamp base is sold on its own: without lamp shade, electrical wiring or lightbulb socket/lamp harp. The lamp base is made for two light bulbs: one on the top in a lamp socket with a lamp harp onto which a lamp shade should be fixed and another bulb inside the base so that light can shine through the holes for a additional light effect. There is a hole for the wiring to enter at the base (see photo) and another to exit at the top (see photo). The ceramic lamp base is in very good vintage condition considering its age. It has no cracks or visible chips. There is a small flaw in the glaze (see photo) that originates from the production process itself. The lamp has one small chip on the bottom rim (see photo) that is almost not visible but that can be felt when running your fingers over the surface. When standing in upright position, the chip is not visible at all. The lamp has hardly any signs of wear or aging on the surface. Due to its material, weight and size, this item needs a specific shipping quote. Please contact 1stDibs or me directly with any shipping inquiries.
