About the Item
The distinctive reflector on this iconic Paavo Tynell table lamp gave it a few nicknames such as the cow's bell, church bell, hat lamp or even Snufkin after the character in the Moomins by Tove Jansson.
Part of the most sought after catalouged series lamps with pierced brass and rattans, this one is one of the rarest table lamps and most wanted due to it's unique shape.
This example is in exceptionally good condition with the original rattan intact. The inside of the shade has been repainted and electrical wiring renewed.
Paavo Tynell was known as the man who illuminated Finland and his genious is quite easy to spot from the iconic designs he has made during his years in Taito, Idman and later for the U.S. market.

Paavo Tynell
Paavo Tynell, who was born in Helsinki, Finland in 1890, started his career as a tin- and blacksmith at the company Kory Oy. Simultaneously, he studied at the Helsinki University of Industrial Arts, from which he graduated as a master craftsman in 1913. In 1918, Tynell co-founded the metalwork and lighting company Oy Taito Ab. At first, the company focused mostly on interior and exterior metalwork, such as statues and railings. Later, during the 1930s, Taito also began producing lamps for the lighting sector. Both Alvar Aalto and Kaj Franck would design works for the company.
