About the Item

Pair Modern Lamps by Otto Guggenheim Lamp Co, Made by Women during the war rations era of WWII. Maplewood Cylinder on Glass base with cherry Glass finial. During WWII many materials were rationed, but Glass was not. Furniture showrooms across America were notably absent of Furniture due to the war effort conversion of larger companies. And, in response, department stores turned to Glass companies to make furniture. H. H. Turchin is one such company which capitalized on the opportunity to fill showrooms with their glass furniture. Otto Guggenheim Lamps, pivoted from lamps to furniture in order to help fill the niche. The modern designs pioneered by Gilbert Rohde were templated by Turchin and Guggenheim as well as others to make likable inexpensive forms. Just as 16 million Americans were in Uniform for the war effort, many millions of Americans migrated to cities and town centers to support the domestic war industry. Washington DC, as an example, was a destination for many educated, but too-old/exempt civilian support staff. DC subsequently experienced a housing shortage, and presumably a furniture shortage, once the housing issue was solved. Extrapolated across America, it is not too much of a reach to consider women who moved to the cities to take war industry positions had both an income and a need to furnish a living space. FDR famously stated that he didn't want to see any millionaires created from the war industry. Perhaps this is a theme for the lower rungs of society. So, you'll see a significant curtailing of opulence in advertising, at least, and availability of expensive and/or new non-perishable products generally. The war rationed modern furniture market is sort of lesser understood, as the emphasis for history is on the tremendous human conflict weighing on humanity from this period. Before the war the theme would be pioneering new niches of modern industrial designed products by the likes of Gilbert Rohde and Russell Wright. Post war designer branding is sorta the trend which makes MCM the draw for the avant-garde, as designer furniture history goes. War era furniture market for the average American meant mostly blue-collar women in the war industry. These lamps are branded: Maid of Honor. This double entendre exemplifies the pride of construction as well as the craftswomen making the item. The maple cylinders are common parts used in coffee tables, end tables, and tea carts from this era by Otto Guggenheim Lamp Co.; and H. H. Turchin glass furniture company, generally. The glass component bases offer a flexible option of design interest, which match a broader showroom theme of glass as a primary medium. In this case, the star bases add a sparkle of Nationalistic esteem for America. Are these lamps important designs? Only if you think the contribution of Women matters. Lamps have been rewired.
