Pair MCM Black & Gold Large Scale Table Lamps by Carstens Tonnieshof of Germany

About the Item

Stunning vintage mid-century modern black matte and gold asymmetrical glazed design floor vase style large scale table lamps with off-white linen-look hard backed drum shades and round wood bases by Carstens Tonnieshof Germany. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. One of the shades is a bit whiter than the other, like maybe it sat in the sun more. It is only noticeable if they are side by side. We replaced a 3 way socket and rewired the lamps and painted the wood base and cap black. When disassembling to rewire we not only found the Carstens mark but found that the bottom of one of the lamps had been removed and stabilized and realized that is why this pair of lamps had a wood top and bottom as well as extra holes in the ceramic of the lamp bases for cord exit duplicating what is on the wood base. We believe these to be original factory repairs. They are not noticeable unless disassembled. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Mid-20th Century. A special atmosphere or mood of a particular environment – definition of Ambience. This pair of luxurious lamps by Carstens Tonnieshof of Germany is sure to set just the right mood for any environment! At just under two feet tall, (without the shades!!) this pair of table lamps is pretty large scale. They have a marvelous asymmetrical design on the lamp bodies featuring black matte and gorgeous gold glaze and they stand upon a round black painted wood base and they are wearing their original off-white linen-look hard backed drum shades. They are going to be beautiful on a pair of nightstands in your bedroom or upon a wonderful pair of end tables in the living room. They are mid-century modern in style, but they will blend in beautifully with almost any décor and they are ready to add just the right ambience to any room in your home. They’re bold, bright, beautiful, and beaming with black and gold BLISS. Carstens Tonnieshof was founded in 1892 by brothers Ernst and Christian Hinrich Carstens in Rheinsberg (Brandenburg) Germany. Up until the 2nd world war, the company maintained production at various locations. By 1945 the company had more or less collapsed and the location in East Germany was lost. It was then that the brothers established Carstens Tonnieshof which, from 1947, was located in Fredelsloh (Niedersachsen). Carstens Tonnieshof not only produced vases, but also lamp bases and other utility ceramics. In the 1960’s Carstens expanded and by 1970 they were producing products in Austria, Chile, Australia, and Argentina. Some of the designers included Trude Carstens’ wife of Ernst Carstens, Gerda Heuckeroth, Dieter Peter, A. Seide, and Heinz Siery. Due to financial issues the company closed in 1984. This is an incredible pair of table lamps by Carstens Tonnieshof, Germany. Table lamps of this eclectic stature won’t last long. Don’t hesitate… Make them YOURS!!! • Vintage MCM Art Deco Figural Jester Harlequin Table Lamps Style of Marbro Pair
    By The Marbro Lamp Company
    Located in Topeka, KS
Enjoyable vintage MCM (Mid-Century Modern) Art Deco figural jester or harlequin table lamps in the style of Marbro, a pair. Comprised of molded plaster, hand painted details, antiqued gold painted stems and finials, and new black silk like drum shades. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. There were some cracks and chips that have been repaired. They have new wiring, sockets, & base felt. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Mid-20th Century. Let’s get this party started!!! Did you know, a jester, court jester, fool or joker was historically a member of the household of a nobleman, or a monarch employed to entertain guests during the medieval and Renaissance eras? A jester was also an itinerant performer who entertained common folk at fairs and markets… and now this whimsical performing duo is ready to entertain YOU!!! This is a lively pair of figural table lamps in the style of Marbro comprised of molded plaster with intricately hand painted details. They have antiqued gold painted finials under new black silk like drum shades. The male is wearing a fabulous one piece garment embellished with gold and black diamonds, a cape with a broad gold ruffled collar, a black face mask with bright blue eyes, a Renaissance pirate style hat, and he is jamming out on his mandolin with one foot perched upon a ball. The female jester or “Plaisante” appears to be dancing and getting her groove on to the beat of the mandolin. Her outfit matches the male jester with black and gold diamonds down her pants, an identical wide gold ruffled collar, and a gold zig zag on the front of her top. And let’s not forget to mention her gorgeous gold shoes!! She also has a black face mask with blue eye slots and her hat is pointed with jewels on the front. She holds a facial fan which she waves as she dances and a shawl that drapes loosely across her back and flows as she glides to the music. They are sturdied by antiqued gold painted stems and they both stand upon a square base stacked upon a larger gilded square with rounded edges… They are absolutely EXQUISITE!!! Can’t you just hear the strum of the strings and see them laughing and dancing in front of their King or nobleman? We certainly can! They will be wonderful in a game or entertainment room, in your living room, one on each side of the sofa upon a pair of end tables or side by side on a sofa table, or in your bedroom, one on each nightstand beside your bed. They are mid-century modern with a little Art Deco and Hollywood Regency flair and will blend in beautifully with many décor styles. If you are a clown collector or jester lover and have been searching for just the right addition to your home… you just found it! They are amusing, completely charming, and sure to entertain you and your guests for years to come!! There’s no more time for “funny business….” You simply MUST make them YOURS!!! Female Lamp...
