Pair of 19th Century French Painted Porcelain Table Oil Lamps on Bronze Bases

About the Item

These elegant antique "Lampes a Petrole" (or oil lamps) were crafted in France, circa 1870. The fixtures, converted into table lamps, sit on gilded bronze platform ending with sculpted, decorative feet bases. They feature the original flame regulator mechanism including the off and on turning key at the pediment. (The flame regulator mechanism, was originally used to adjust the height of the wick, allowing precise control over the flame size and light intensity). Each colorful porcelain base is crafted in a vase-like shape, featuring a dark, glossy surface adorned with intricate hand-painted floral motifs; the central still life composition showcases a carefully painted arrangement of musical instruments, including a lute and a horn, placed over a bouquet of vibrant flowers. At the center of the base, the oval medallion holds a delicately detailed floral arrangement, framed by gold scroll-work and blue ribbon-like decorations on either side. The other side features a classical profile portrait of a woman; the woman is depicted in the style of a Roman or Greek goddess, with her hair elegantly tied up, wearing a gold necklace, and shown in profile against a light background. The portrait is framed by a golden oval, similar to the previous side, and is surrounded by intricate gold vine patterns that intertwine with blue, bell-shaped flowers, providing a harmonious decorative balance. Both Napoleon III dual-light fixtures with new wiring are in excellent condition. Place these oil lamps on bedside tables or nightstands, or use them in a dining room on a console or buffet. Shades not included. Measures: 7" diameter 28" height.
