About the Item

USA, ca. 1950s. A pair of studio table lamps by local ceramicist Anne Appleton Clarke (1925-1985). Each features sturdy, hand-thrown tapered construction with organic striated glaze. Professionally rewired and fitted with new linen shades that cast a warm and inviting light. Would be quite striking as bedside lamps - or on either side of a long sofa. Excellent vintage condition with signature to underside. While we can only find scant biographical information about Anne Appleton Clarke, she was a descendant of multiple old New England families. On her father’s side, her relations include the Colonial preacher, Samuel Appleton, and also Fanny Appleton, the second wife of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. While on her mother’s side, she was related to General William Tecumseh Sherman - who led the “scorched earth” march from Atlanta to the sea during the Civil War. It seems, however, fired clay was Anne’s preferred scorched earth! Dimensions: 17” diameter x 29” high.
