Pair of exceptional French table lamps representing two sphinxes from Greek/Roman mythology with a woman's face, lion's body and winged, in French Empire and Art Deco style circa 1920.
In ancient Greece and the Roman Empire, sphinxes were mythologized as treacherous and ruthless, capable of killing and eating those who were unable to answer their riddle. This pair of lamps are two very rare pieces to see, with the charm of their silhouette and the nobility of the solid gilded bronze with which they are made.
For one E27 bulb each piece. Revised and updated electrification. Screens not included. Measurements without screen.
