About the Item

A pair of unique French Louis XVI style urn-form gilt bronze-mounted granite lamps. Each lamp is constructed in a classical urn shape, with a wide, rounded body rising from a circular socle and set upon a square granite plinth. The granite is worked in a mottled pink, white, and black composition, giving a richly speckled surface across the full form. The upper sections are fitted with circular collars and molded rims, while the square plinths are raised on four gilt bronze bun feet. Mounted on each side of the bodies are gilt bronze satyr-mask handles, modeled in relief with expressive facial features, elongated beards, and curling horns. From the mouths hang gilt bronze rings formed as braided vines, adding both structural ornament and classical reference. The mounts are cast with sharp detail and remain polished in contrast to the polished granite. The urn tops are fitted with circular gilt bronze medallions, each cast with leaf ornament. The design follows the Louis XVI style, reflecting the neoclassical preference for symmetry, architectural forms, and antique-inspired motifs. French makers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries frequently combined richly colored stones with gilt bronze mounts in this fashion, drawing from traditions of luxury furnishing and monumental decorative arts. This pair of granite urns, adapted as lamps, demonstrates the combination of durable stonework and gilt bronze ornamentation typical of French neoclassical decorative objects.
