About the Item

A striking pair of French black-ground porcelain vases, now mounted as table lamps, attributed to Samson, Edmé et Cie, Paris, circa 1880–1900. Each vase is crafted in the Neoclassical taste with a rich matte black glaze and hand-painted enamel decoration depicting mythological Greco-Roman chariot scenes in vivid polychrome tones. The classical figures—draped in flowing garments and posed in dynamic motion—are emblematic of Samson’s celebrated interpretations of ancient Greek and Etruscan pottery. The decoration is accented by a stylized Greek key meander band in deep red and gold near the base. The vases are of baluster form with flared trumpet necks and are mounted on custom round bases with bronze-toned fittings. The visible mold seams and decorative style are consistent with known Samson production methods of the period. Height to top of finials 33" Height to top of vase 20" Samson, Edmé et Cie was a prominent 19th-century Parisian firm specializing in reproductions of high-style European porcelain, including pieces in the Sèvres, Meissen, and ancient Greek styles. Their works are highly collectible for their historical craftsmanship and bold aesthetics.
