Nils Johan Thorvald Thorsson (24 October 1898 in Eslöv, Skåne – 25 October 1975 in Copenhagen) was a Danish ceramist and painter who was the artistic director of the faience factory Aluminia 1933-1969 and of the stoneware department at the Royal Porcelænsfabrik 1949-1969. Nils Thorsson's name came to light when in 1925 he exhibited a series of variegated earthenware (autumn series) awarded with a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris. Around 1930, he began a modernization of the casting and spraying technique and thereby paved the way for a rationalization of the steel production; In 1937, in collaboration with the technicians, he carried out "the industrialized frame", which simultaneously meets technical and aesthetic requirements. With a number of different, good decorations ("Sonja", "Solbrud", "Jenny" and others). In 1939 he provided a drawing for a new frame without decoration: "Alma". In addition to the frames, T. has drawn models and decorations for vases and bowls in faience (Solbjerg, Bremerholm, Lustrefajance, Tenera and Baca), matte porcelain and stoneware (Jungle as well as works in Solfatara, Clair de lune, Olivin, Dilou etc.). T.'s unbridled desire to experiment with new glazes and ceramic substance effects has produced remarkable results; he understood how to turn a jar and had a fine feeling for form and decoration. His world of motifs was large and ranged from pure naturalism to abstract, geometric patterns, either painted or in relief. Ancient ceramic tradition and culture can be traced in his safe, light brush technique. - Works in the Art Industry Museum in Kbh., The royal The Porcelain Factory Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the National Museum in Stockholm and the Ceramic Museum in Faenza. – Has illustrated Svend Poulsen: Roses (1941).
