About the Item
Large gilded majolica table lamps feature elaborate Victorian style design with urn or teapot shaped bodies mounted on square bases. The top of the urn shaped part is decorated with an ornate handle on one side and bird or griffon head on the opposing side, creating an illusion of a teapot mounted on the tall urn base. Chinoiserie style reticulated elements in plain white glaze, a nod to blanc de chine, are incorporated in both the urn and the base structure, creating a distinct color and texture contrast within the lamps.
The solid, non-reticulated areas of the ceramic are done in semi-glossy black background glaze and decorated with Modernist style abstract flower garlands in pink and green colors; the garlands are following the complex, rounded shape of the urn, accenting the curves and the sculpted details. The large reticulated elements on the urn body are used as backgrounds for silhouettes of people in antique Baroque or Rococo style dress - a man wearing a wig reading a letter under a tree on one side, and a lady in court dress, standing in what appears to be a garden and looking at a flower in her hand. The figures are meticulously hand painted in black and gold. All major textured details of the lamps are gilded.
The lamps were handmade in Italy for Ardalt Importing. They are marked with the model numbers and "Profilo Italy Argalt" on the bottoms. The lamps are in fully operational, good vintage condition with some slight, age-appropriate wear on the gold.
Sculptural, highly unusual lamps in a playful mix of Victorian, Chinoiserie, and Modernist styles, with elegant form, high quality decoration and craftsmanship, and statement piece presence, will make a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Victorian, Transitional, Hollywood Regency, Glam, Grand Millennial, Collected, or Contemporary.

Roman Erlikh
Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.

View AllAlfredo Santarelli Pair of White Reticulated Majolica Table Lamps, 1940s-1950s
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Sculptural majolica lamps feature complex hand-sculpted reticulated bodies with 4 vertical segments; two narrower segments are composed around the central medallions of Sun God face, surrounded by abstract geometric pattern, and two wider segments consist of complex lattice work, influenced by Art Deco and Renaissance styles. Minimal elongated shape of the lamps balances highly textured reticulated designs, and the choice of white glaze adds a Modernist touch to the pieces.
The lamps are mounted on brass bases with brass fixtures; they are signed by the artist on the inner rims of the ceramic bodies. The ceramic parts were acquired from the importing warehouse that operated in 1940s-1970s; they were stored unused, as old new stock, for at least 50 years, before finally being wired. It is quire rare to find a pair of lamps by an important Italian ceramic artist of early 20th century; we are excited to be able to offer another pair of white majolica lamps by Alfredo Santarelli in different shape in a separate listing.
The lamps are fully operational with the new brass single turn knob sockets, wired for US 110v, standard polarized plugs. The ceramics are in good vintage condition with some age-appropriate signs of storage wear on the glaze that are not detracting from the overall quality of the pieces, and are shown in the pictures. The issues can be corrected professionally at discretion of the customer; we chose to not restore the ceramic parts to preserve the original condition and the vintage charm of the lamps.
Alfredo Santarelli (1874-1957) was born in Gualdo Tadino, Italy; he is considered one of the most important Italian ceramic artists of the 20th century. His talent in drawing and his mastery in the tin glazing technique (lusterware) won him a large number of golden medals in International and Italian ceramic exhibitions. His excellent portraits and classic subjects are prized collectors’ items, but he also interpreted Islamic, Liberty and Art Deco designs and shapes with great originality. In the second half of the 20’s his art evolved in line with the contemporary trends.
Santarelli started his career in the pottery studio of Paolo Rubboli...
