About the Item

Pair of 19th Century French Porcelain Oil Lamps Converted to Table Lamps with Bacchus Masks, circa 1870 Pair of French porcelain oil lamps, circa 1870, later converted to table lamps. Richly hand-painted with floral motifs and adorned with Bacchus masks, mounted on gilt bronze bases. Fitted with custom wild silk lampshades, highly decorative and refined. Exceptional pair of French porcelain oil lamps, later converted into table lamps, dating from circa 1870. The porcelain bodies are richly hand-painted with vibrant floral motifs, including roses, tulips, and exotic flowers. Each lamp features striking applied Bacchus masks with grapes and leaves in relief, symbolizing festivity and abundance. The lamps stand on finely cast and gilded bronze bases, adding a refined neoclassical touch. Originally designed as oil lamps, they were sensitively converted to electricity and are now fitted with a single E14 socket each. The lamps are fitted with custom-made lampshades crafted from wild silk, a natural and luxurious fabric known for its warm texture and subtle sheen, perfectly complementing the vivid porcelain decoration. A highly decorative and rare pair that brings together antique craftsmanship and modern functionality. Dimensions Total height (with shade): 75 cm / 29.5 in Base width: 24 cm / 9.4 in Shade: H 32 cm × Ø 40 cm / H 12.6 in × Ø 15.7 in Style: Neoclassical, Napoleon III, Hollywood Regency (decorative appeal) Period: 19th Century (circa 1870) These lamps are not only decorative but also historically significant, as they started life as 19th century French oil lamps and were later sensitively converted to electricity. The combination of finely hand-painted porcelain, applied Bacchus masks in relief, gilt bronze mounts, and custom wild silk lampshades makes this pair especially rare. Unlike many decorative pieces of the period, these lamps come as a matched pair, which adds to their value and appeal. Comparable examples are difficult to find on the market, making this set a true statement for refined interiors.
