Rare Pair 19 C. French Ormolu Mounted Theodore Deck Faience Porcelain Lamps

About the Item

A Rare Pair of 19th Century French Ormolu Mounted Signed Theodore Deck Faience Porcelain Vases Mounted to Lamps. The porcelain bodies have a flattened, circular form with a slightly convex profile. The surface is covered in a turquoise/green glaze with an overall scrolling foliate relief pattern. The neck is elongated and twisted in a spiral form, with a narrow cylindrical rim. Two small loop handles extend from the upper shoulders of the vases. At the base of each handle, molded grotesque mask faces are integrated into the body. The vases are mounted on ormolu bases, which feature scrolling acanthus leaf motifs and raised, stylized paw feet. The mounts are applied at the base of the porcelain and fitted to support the weight of the vases. Additional ormolu elements are present at the top, where the vases have been adapted for use as lamps. A pierced ormolu collar encircles the rim, securing the lamp fixture. The lamps are fitted with harp-shaped metal frames to support shades. Théodore Deck (1823–1891) was a French ceramicist known for his work in faience, specializing in vividly colored glazes, including his signature turquoise blue. His pieces often featured elaborate patterns, Persian and Islamic-inspired motifs, and molded relief decorations. Deck served as the director of the Sèvres porcelain manufacturer in the late 1800s, and his work was widely exhibited in international exhibitions. His faience objects, signed with his name, are highly regarded for their distinctive color palettes and refined decorative techniques.
