About the Item

Rare 'Radar' Table Lamp by Gjlla Giani for Nucleo Sormani, Italy, 1971 An exceptional and highly collectible example of Italian radical design, this rare 'Radar' table lamp was designed by Gjlla Giani for Nucleo Sormani in 1971, signed on the bottom. Its sculptural body is crafted from solid pewter, which has developed a refined, uniform patina over time—resulting in a distinctive matte-grey aesthetic. When illuminated, the lamp emits a soft, warm glow that enhances the subtle texture and tonality of the pewter, creating a poetic contrast between its cold, industrial presence and the inviting warmth of the light. The lamp originates from Nucleo, the avant-garde research and design division of Italian furniture maker Sormani, active during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Founded as a platform for experimentation, Nucleo brought together visionary designers, architects, and artists to push the boundaries of form, material, and concept. Unlike Sormani’s mainline production, which focused on refined modern furnishings, Nucleo operated at the cutting edge—producing limited-edition pieces that often blurred the line between object and art. Nucleo became renowned for its bold use of unconventional materials such as pewter, plexiglass, and steel, and its connection to Italy’s space-age and conceptual design movements. Today, works from this division are considered rare and highly sought after—valued for their intellectual rigor, sculptural qualities, and historical significance in the narrative of postwar Italian design. A true design statement and an outstanding addition to any serious collection.

Large abstract ‘Verticali’ sculpture in by Roberto Cordone, Italy 1972
Located in Sittard, LI
Large abstract 'Verticali' sculpture by Italian artist Roberto Cordone, Italy 1972. This sculpture is made out of polished stainless steel and created for the German headquarters of Johnson & Johnson in Düsseldorf, this is a unique piece. All in a good original condition with wear and patina consistent with its age. The sculpture stands 285cm (112.2 inch) tall, is 101cm (39.7inch) wide on both side and rests on a 116cm (45.6inch) round base. The Verticali sculptures were conceived for the outdoors, anchored to the earth, often in correspondence with the surrounding architecture. They are stainless steel sculptures, larger than life, built by using segments of cylinders and spheres welded together in symmetrical or asymmetrical relationships. Because of their highly polished, reflective metal surfaces, these sculptures reflect the surrounding environment and architecture and are in a constant process of change Roberto Cordone (born 11 April 1941 in Vallecrosia, Liguria) is an Italian artist and sculptor. He has spent most of his career in Cologne, Germany. His most famous art work...
