About the Item

A fine Art Deco frosted and clear molded glass table lamp in the "Sophora" pattern by René Lalique (French, 1860–1945), the baluster form body molded with stylized foliage in deep relief, alternating between clear and frosted finishes to enhance the sinuous, organic surface. The body rests on a circular gilt metal base with rosette and beaded border detailing, and is surmounted by a conforming gilt-metal collar and fitted with a double-socket gilt-metal fixture. The frosted flaring neck harmonizes with the domed gilt-metal collar, accentuating the interplay between naturalistic form and machine-age elegance. The underside of the base is etched R. LALIQUE – FRANCE, with additional impressed Made in France mark to the brass plinth. Adjustable height mechanism to the metal shaft. This example represents Lalique’s transition from purely decorative objects to functional luxury interiors in the 1920s–30s, when he began producing lighting for elite European and American clientele. The Sophora motif, named after the ornamental flowering tree, exemplifies Lalique's fascination with botanical forms rendered in the sculptural vocabulary of Art Deco. Measurements: Adjustable height 23 to 27 inches; width 10.5 inches.
