Rococo Style French Table Lamp in Chiseled Brass and Pongé Fabric Lampshade

Original table lamp obtained by electrifying an exceptional church candlestick and providing it with a pongé fabric lampshade; the candlestick was made inspired by a rich Rococo style in a goldsmith's workshop in the suburbs of Paris between 1860 and 1865; The skillful master craftsman made the candlestick using sheets of soft brass which he finely, minutely and wonderfully chiseled with rocaille motifs, then soldered them together in a proportionate manner to form the base and the shaft; the three feet are instead of fusion finished with a chisel, the whole was then subjected to gilding; Three cameos of burnished casting were placed on the base, representing the faces of Jesus Christ, the Madonna, and St. Joseph, respectively; the lampshade and electrification were clearly produced and placed at later times (1950-1953). The technique of chiseling has been used since the second millennium B.C. and reached its highest expression in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. It consists in striking the surface with punches in order to obtain a relief decoration (see photo). In order to avoid perforations, the surface opposite to the one struck is put in contact with a bag of sand, or, alternatively, the piece is filled with pitch. The beating can be done from the inside of the object (repoussé), from the outside (chasing), or from both sides (embossing), with a finishing of the details from the outside of the piece after having embossed it from the inside. In this way, it is possible to obtain simple decorations of the chasing type, but also more refined decorations which, in the most refined pieces, can reach pictorial effects. Our candlestick belongs to the latter technique. The Master chiseller was certainly also a valid draughtsman and an excellent engraver, in fact, the candlestick is rich in these particular and difficult processes. Rococo is a style that originated in France around 1720. The term Rococo derives from the French rocaille, the term indicated the artificial rocks, stones, and shells that were used for the decoration of fountains, gardens, and caves and is considered an evolution of the late Baroque, evokes and reflects the aristocratic taste of court life, its characteristics are recognizable by the great elegance and opulence of the forms, the waves branched in playful curls and slight floral arabesques. The "pongé" fabric is smooth silk with a very compact weave that enhances the brilliance of the colors; the silk pongé is often used to make foulards, linings, light garments, but often also for lampshades, as it is very resistant to heat.
