Savoy Cabbage Fossil Lamp by Jenna Basso Pietrobon
About the Item
The lamp is made by using the actual vegetable to create impressions. This allows each lamp to be one-of-a-kind. The light bulb is adjustable. I often use the mirror light bulb with these works. The bulb does not come with the ceramic sculptural lamp.
* the lamp in the video is of a different 'Savoy Cabbage Fossil' lamp but it gives you an example of what it looks like on all angles.
The work is made in my family's hometown of Nove di Bassano, in Veneto, Italy. The town has been famoUs in ceramics for generations, and my grandfather was born here and was a ceramicist. He immigrated to Canada in the 1950s, but I returned to his hometown to create my new artwork.
This piece is part of a larger project called 'Sow, Sew, and So' which was inspired by the Italian Futurists view on food, Vandana Shiva and the issues we face in agriculture today, any my chronic illness, which heightened my awareness of the food and pharmaceutical industries. Years of battling heavy metal toxicity fueled my determination to advocate for improved agricultural practices and challenge the influence of corporate control in these sectors. The concept of fossilization of vegetables is a central theme in Sow, Sew,
and So. By working with impressions of vegetables in clay, I create a metaphorical fossil—a lasting reminder of the importance of preserving biodiversity and honoring the cycles of nature, inviting contemplation on themes of time, change, and resilience.
Part of the proceeds go towards seed-banks around the world.

Jenna Basso Pietrobon
Born in 1986, Jenna Basso Pietrobon is an artist who fearlessly explores society through her personal experiences. She received her Masters in Fine Arts at Columbia University in 2017. Her work offers a raw critique of political, economic, and social systems, using a blend of painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, design, psychology, performance, and activism. Break the Mold: Within the world of ceramics, plaster molds are used to make duplicative objects; the molds are vessels which facilitate mass-production and mass-consumption. Her artistic practice turns a critical eye toward this type of rote production, and asks how we can instead turn the molds normally used to make repetitive identical pieces into vehicles for unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. Basso Pietrobon explains further, "In the 1950s, my grandparents left Italy for Canada, where my grandfather used his knowledge of ceramics to make lamps. Following his footsteps back to Nove, Italy almost 70 years later, I have returned to my grandfather’s town to likewise produce my own clay forms. Part of the proceeds of the sales will go towards the artisans in the town to help revitalize the craft of ceramics."
